A proper fillet weld will ensure a much stronger and consistent weld. This technique not only depends on the skill of the weldor, but also on the equipment parameters used. Here are some tips for creating effective fillet welds.
- When sizing the fillet, the thickness of the weld should be about the same thickness of the two pieces being welded together.
- A travel speed that is too slow might create a weld that is too thick and misshapen. A travel speed to fast won't create a large enough weld.
- When shielding gas is delivered to rapidly it can cause turbulence and create porous welds, causing them to weaken and become misshapen.
- Using an amperage rating too high or too low will inconsistently melt the wire. This will also lead to inconsistency and malformation.
- It is important to achieve sufficient penetration on both sides of the weldment joint. Insufficient penetration will take away from the strength of the weld.
